My trip to north-east India was an experience of a lifetime. The weather was great and the rain was kind enough not to disturb our itinerary :). Of all the things I have experienced in this trip somethings remain fresh in my mind, so I thought of sharing it with you.

Mawlynnong, Meghalaya

Cleanest village in Asia: This is about a 100km from Shillong. Mawlynnong is a small village which won the status of being the cleanest village in 2003. Not only is this village spotless clean but their utensils shine like silver.

The Khasi

The Khasi are tribal people, the majority of whom live in the State of Meghalaya in north east India. This is was the first Matriarchy society I came across. Matriarchy is a society in which females, especially mothers, have the central roles of political leadership, moral authority, and control of property.

The living root bridges

The early Khasi had a problem of crossing swift flowing rivers and mountain streams. They came up with a unique and interesting solution, the living root bridges. We got the opportunity to visit two living bridges. One which was ready and the other still being built. I am glad till date about our decision to visit both.

Border of India

Standing near the no man’s land dividing India and Bangladesh made me think about all these imaginary lines which we have drawn around ourselves to divide earth!

Cheerapunji

Having visited this place in monsoon, I surely understood what can be called heavy rain. My definition changed and I am glad I visited this wonderful place. Here, rain spanning for couple of days is not uncommon. The best part is how the people have worked around to live with the rain.

I hope you too get to travel there and share your experiences!
